Donati Family Vineyard is well known for its collection of exceptional wines available at reasonable prices. The vineyard was founded in 1998 and features a variety of soils from limestone to decomposed granite and clay. Because of its location in Monterey Bay, the environment is ideal for growing premium winegrapes.
The main focus of the winery is on Bordeaux varieties, including cabernet sauvignon and merlot, but they also produce select amounts of chardonnay, pinot blanc, pinot grigio, syrah and Grenache.
We recently sampled the 2008 claret, which offers aromas of cherry, leather and earth. The red wine had flavors of plum and cherry with smooth tannin and balanced acid on the mid palate. Retail price is $14.99.
The 2008 cabernet sauvignon was our favorite with aromas of raspberry and cherry. The red berry had soft tannin on the mid palate balanced with moderate acid and a nice finish. Retail price is $19.99.
The 2008 Ezio was delicious with hints of vanilla, spice and coffee. We loved the rich tannin and soft acid finish with dark berry fruit and cocoa. Retail price $34.99.
The un-oaked chardonnay offered a crisp taste with flavors of lemon meringue followed by hints of grapefruit zest and fruit. Retail price is $11.99.
