Throughout the late 80’s and 90’s kickboxing Champion Don “The Dragon” Wilson was a dominate force in the straight to video action market. It seemed like he was churning them out left and right always delivering his signature martial arts action to keep the fans wanting more. One of his later films 2007’s The Last Sentinel bringing along with him Battlestar Galactica alum Katie Sackhoff for a post-apocalyptic style sci-fi action flick. Could this film live up to his normal standards like the Bloodfist and Ring of Fire series?
The Last Sentinel follows an enhanced soldier who rescues a rebel woman from a failed resistance mission. Can she learn to and think like a machine to battle alongside him to save the human race against the dreaded drone police? This film is a bit different than some of Wilson’s earlier works, but in a good way. Here you get an older more hardened version that seems to deliver a more stoic style performance that really works for him. Sackhoff does a fine job as usual, but this is Wilson’s show all around. While the originally aired as a SyFy channel film, it plays way better and feels like it has a bigger scope than their normal cheesy fair. Alongside Wilson and Sackhoff, Bokeem Woodbine and Keith David pop up giving some fun performances and helping to round out the story and action. Fans of Wilson may hope for some great martial arts action, but here it is more of a full on gun toting actioner with just a few martial arts moments here and there, which Wilson himself added.
This is not only a great addition to the Wilson filmography, but also one that shows a different side to him. Clearly we want to see him bringing the pain with his traditional real life approach to the fight sequences, but it’s still fun to see him raining down a fury of bullets on everyone around him and chewing up the screen like only he can. If you are a Don “The Dragon” Wilson fan then give the Last Sentinel a try.
