With the releases of The Purge, The Conjuring, and next month’s Insidious: Chapter 2, this is becoming the summer of the horror movie. You can add You’re Next to the batch too. It may not have any famous names attached to it, but I can assure you it has more blood and violence than any of the other films I mentioned (if that’s your thing).
From watching the trailer, one might write it off as just another home invasion movie. Films like The Purge have already done the scenario of intruders with masks terrorizing people at their homes. In this case though, we have an entire family (including boyfriends and girlfriends) being attacked and what makes it interesting is that the family itself is a bit dysfunctional. This helps the movie make room for some twisted humor here and there as well. The intruders wear lamb, fox, and tiger masks this go-around. We’re not told why they’re trying to off the members of the family one by one, but eventually we find out of course. And there’s a decent twist or two along the way.
You’ll find yourself rooting for the family trying to fight back as there’s pretty much constant action after the first 20 minutes or so. There isn’t anything too spectacular to make you remember the movie down the road, but it will certainly hold your interest once it gets going. If you’re a horror movie fan, you’ll probably love this. For those who are just somewhat interested in this kind of entertainment, you should at least find it engaging even if it’s short-lived.
