Documentary review: 'Inuit Knowledge and Climate Change'

Global warming has been a hot topic– literally  – for many years. However, only the scientific community seems to be given a voice in this debate. What if, for once, we were to hear what those directly affected by climate change had to say?

It took director Zacharias Kunuk ("Atanarjuat: The Fast Runner") and researcher and filmmaker Dr. Ian Mauro ("Seeds of Change") two and a half years to bring "Inuit Knowledge and Climate Change" to the public. In this film, featuring five Inuktitut dialects, the two directors followed Inuit Elders, women and hunters to document their knowledge and experience regarding global warming and its direct consequences on the Arctic – and ultimately, the rest of the world.

The result is a powerful, educational and unforgettable experience. The documentary pays homage to a people whose culture is not only rich, but also wise, observant and respectful of its surroundings. It also offers an alternative to some scientific explanations relayed by mainstream media, forcing viewers to question and challenge their validity.
