Documentary review: ‘Conversations for Change’

I met Nejeed Kassam during the launch of his book, “High on Life: Stories of Hope, Change, and Leadership,” in Winnipeg last year. Since then, I have followed his humanitarian work with interest. So, when he asked me to review the new documentary that he had produced with Alesha Porisky, I knew I was in for a treat.

We have all felt overwhelmed by the problems in this world. We have all been faced with the question: “What can I do as an individual to really change the status quo?” This is a daunting question to which there seems to be no easy answer. Unless, you take the time to watch “Conversation for Change.”

“Conversations for Change” is a 66-minute documentary featuring 38 young Canadians who have affected the world around them in various ways. Whether it is Hannah Taylor (Founder of the Ladybug Foundation), Ben Peterson (Co-founder and Executive Director of Journalists for Human Rights) or Jamie Keast (Founder of Global Soul Sisters), these changemakers share openly what motivates them to stand up and make a difference, and why they are so successful at what they do.

“Conversations for Change” offers an uplifting alternative to the bleak outlook that pervades our surroundings, while encouraging members of all ages and from all walks of life to take a stand. The boys, girls, men and women profiled in the documentary are perfect embodiments of two ideas: passion and purpose. They lead by example. As a matter of fact, their records of positive activism could make most older self-proclaimed humanitarians green with envy.

The most important message of “Conversations for Change” is that it is never too late to question our own purpose. It is never too late to take the necessary steps to kill apathy and become the change we want to see in the world.

We need more documentaries like “Conversations for Change.” If you watch it, you will understand what I mean.
