Last week, The Music Box: A Shanty Town Sound Laboratory was open to the public for two days, preceded by two concerts held the weekend before. This incredible project, led by local artists, Taylor Shepherd, Jayme Kalal, Patrick Murry-Nellis, James K, and Brooklyn artist, Swoon, (plus many more) is easier to convey through video documentation. Here is a little something I put together that can give you some idea what to expect.
This footage was made on a Saturday afternoon when I went to the open hours. People were encouraged to explore the premises of this aesthetically pleasing playland of visual and audio treats for anyone interested in those grey areas between art, music, and sound. I thought it was great how this installation was not only accessible to children, but also seemed to make the grown-ups feel like children again.
Here and here are some other videos released by the project's producers.
Alert: Tickets for the last and final performance go on sale this Friday and Saturday. This event is extemely popular so be sure to get a ticket if you don't want to wait in long lines. This project is in its first stages at this point and will only be open again for a short amount of time before phase two begins. Don't miss out!
Here is some information from their website which can be found at: Dithyrambalina.com
The Music Box, an interactive musical village in the city of New Orleans, is currently showcasing international musicians for conducted concerts. The musicians are spread amongst shanties created from the salvaged materials from the 18th century creole cottage which stood on the site. Each shanty houses a prototype of a sound artist’s invented instrument for the upcoming Dithyrambalina, a full-scale musical house designed by the artist Swoon. This is a testing ground and laboratory for her collaborators. This is where we figure out what it means to play a house.
