The DKNY collection is always about New York City streets but this fall 2014 season, Donna Karan took particular strides to focus on the New Yorker. The show commenced with a clip of the eclectic personalities which make New York, New York, discussing why they came to New York and what they loved about New York - Brandee Brown, Juliana Huxtable, Devan Mayfield, Chelsea Leyland, Dorith Mous. One gal actually attributed her move to a really great cup of hot chocolate she once had in New York. Charming.

Following video which served as a backdrop, the show opened with a black quilted parka with long-hair shearling hood, then a nylon bomber with faux fur sleeves - what is New York without an array of parkas and bomber jackets. Then musician Angel Haze took to the runway and we knew there is something different about this show. Haze is slight and petite, a sharp contrast to the Amazons who normally take to the runway like Karlie Kloss last season. For every 1 to 3 looks, another familiar New Yorker took to the stage including TV presenter Daniel Bamdad, curator Sarah Grace Powell, jewelry designer A$AP Illz, artist Mike Bailey Gates, nightlife hostess Melissa Burns, tattoo artist and skateboarder James Quaintance, and photographer Carlos Santolalla. The audience applauded when entrepreneur and New York 'It' girl Hannah Bronfman took to the runway in a navy duffle coat, mini blanket wrap skirt, and bordeaux shearling vest.

The blanket was actually a motif that was lent to a number of looks: as a cape with a short skirt on one model; as a long kilt of sorts on another male model; and as a scarf dress on another model sporting an all black NY Yankees cap.

But it was the vinyl trousers and skirts and spaghetti strap dresses that were eyed with the striped shearling coats which accompanied many of the looks. The collection was indeed a "mash up" as the show notes indicated, delivering all the flavors one would indeed find on New York streets. "Because why commit to one expression when you can wear them all?" New Yorkers are most keen to this idea. It is a "mash up" collection which will do well next fall.

Part 1 and 2 are here and here. featuring more looks from the collection follows.
