Django Unchained is Best Film of the Year
Django Unchained opens like most of Quentin Tarantino’s movies. They start quietly then finish with a bang while flashing to the credits to an older vintage pop song playing in the background. Django opens no differently than Tarantino’s masterpieces Kill Bill 1 & 2 and Pulp Fiction. Django stands on its own as a pre-civil war slavery epic while keeping the over-the-top bloody action and coolness that is Quentin Tarantino. Jamie Foxx plays the title character but it is Christoph Waltz and the superb Leonardo DiCaprio that shine the brightest. Christoph Waltz delivers another wonderful performance as a morally violent man. We don’t see his former role of the evil “Jew Hunter” from Inglorious Basterds but rather a hunter with a heart of gold who hates slavery. After Dr. King (Waltz) frees Django in order to assist him in apprehending a trio of brothers, the two begin a partnership as bounty hunters. Those brothers happen to be Django’s cruel former slave owners. When their partnership proves profitable, King offers to help Django find his enslaved wife Broomhilda (Kerry Washington) and we meet some of the best characters in the movie.
Upon finding that Broomhilda was sold to Calvin Candie (DiCaprio), Django and King depart on their next job, rescuing Broomhilda. When Leonardo DiCaprio appears on the screen as Calvin Candie, we forget any shred of Jack Dawson from Titanic 15 years ago. We see a truly evil sadistic man that has no regard for human life and has his sick amusements when Broomhilda is concerned. The heart of the movie is Django’s love for his wife and a man’s depth to protect what he loves. In Candie’s place, it is what he owns. Django Unchained is the kind of movie where as I was watching it, I never wanted it to end. Although the running time is close to three hours it keeps you constantly entertained as you care about the characters’ futures. With a climax that is reminiscent of a classic Tarantino ending, we are left with the best film of 2012.
Grade: A+
