Disney is known for their infamous vault of films. For those that have been living in a vault themselves and do not know what it is, it’s where they store all their movies and periodically re-release them in various formats. This brilliant tradition has made Disney films not only maintain their classic feel and nature, but also keeps from watering down the market. These Blu-ray releases sport high definition with restored picture and sound, as well as numerous special features. The latest to fly out of the fault is the 2002s Return to Neverland the sequel to the Disney classic Peter Pan.
Peter Pan: Return to Neverland follows Wendy’s very practical and no-nonsense daughter, Jane, as she begins the adventure of a lifetime when the infamous Captain Hook whisks her away to the enchanted island of Never Land. Now it’s up to Peter Pan, Tinker Bell and the Lost Boys to help Jane believe in faith, trust and pixie dust. With the first-ever Lost Girl at his side, will Peter Pan finally defeat Hook and his swashbuckling band of pirates? Of course most of these sequels never really live up to the originals, but this one actually works pretty well. The story is fairly simple and shifts the focus to Wendy’s daughter allowing for a similar story to be told without rehashing the exact that same thing. Sure they repeat some aspects of the original story like Captain Hooks torment but instead of the crocodile this time is an octopus that is actually a bit more entertaining thanks to his popping of the tentacle suction cups to create a similar tone as the tick tock of the clock. Despite the original cast being mostly passed on by the time this film was made they got some great voice actors that recreate the characters perfectly. The animation is clean and vibrant but still manages to feel like it belongs alongside the original. The music is average at best, but still works fine to bring this film to life.
As far as sequels go this one works well and is a fun return to Neverland to hang with the Lost Boys. In addition to this hi-def version it features a few special features and is sure to be a must have for any Disney and Peter Pan fan.
