Disney continues to not only deliver new films, but have been breaking open the vault to bring the classics to Blu-ray as well. Their latest is more of a collection sporting a unique blend with The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad alongside Fun and Fancy Free together in a 2 movie collection, but that is just the beginning of this release.
In The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad they combined two literary works together with the first being 'The Adventures of Mr. Toad', based on the characters from Kenneth Grahame's 'The Wind in the Willows'. The second is based on Washinton Irving's masterpiece 'The Headless Horseman'. Both are classic animation that have rarely been released in their original feature length together, but instead over the years was split into separate specials. If you have never had the chance to see the film in its entirety then it is a whole new experience. The hi-def transfer brings the classic animation to vibrant beautiful life like never before. They both hold up well, with the Ichabod story still bordering on scary and a surprise that it is a kids film, but either way maintains one of the best classic shorts they have ever delivered.
Fun and Fancy free holds up great as well blending real life and animation together with a couple different stories including Bongo and Mickey and the Beanstalk bringing the popular cast of the Disney archive together for the retelling of the classic. Much like the other film in this collection this one is filled with classic animation that is further enhanced by the hi-def transfer. To add to the fun this film also features popular ventriloquist Edgar Bergen along with Mortimer Snerd and Charlie McCarthy as well as host Jiminy Cricket bringing all the stories together. While the film lives up to its title as being fun, but most important to Disney fans marks the final time Walt Disney voiced Mickey Mouse.
While this release is primarily focused on these two films, the best part is that it also includes the uncut version of The Reluctant Dragon. This film blends animation and live action to create a fun little film that serves as a tour through Disney studios and how they make a cartoon. There are some great moments throughout this film and while you may think that it would be the animation, here it is the live action segments. They cleverly blend the black & white and color transition in with the story alongside a small storyline to help keep things moving. Much like the other films in this collection The Reluctant Dragon segment has been released in various forms as well, but here it is back in the full feature where it belongs complete with appearance by Walt Disney himself.
This is sure to be a must have collection for hardcore Disney fans with the wide variety of hard to find films that have been released in so many ways over the years. While this collection doesn’t sport any special features the fact that you get three full length features in one collection makes The Ichabod & Mr Toad and Fun and Fancy Free 2 movie collection a must have so grab yours when it hits Blu-ray on August 12th.
