Disney has been churning out the classics as of late, bringing numerous films out of their famed vault to Blu-ray. Their latest fighting their way out of the vault is 1997s Hercules featuring the voice talents of Tate Donovan, Danny DeVito, James Woods, Bobcat Goldthwait, Matt Frewer, Rip Torn, Hal Holbrook, and Charlton Heston coming to Blu-ray for the first time.

Hercules brings to like the legendary story of the son of the Greek God, Zeus, who is turned into a half-god, half-mortal by evil Hades, God of the Underworld, who plans to overthrow Zeus. Hercules is raised on Earth and retains his god-like strength, but when he discovers his immortal heritage Zeus tells him that to return to Mount Olympus to become a true hero. This film tells a fun great story that gets pretty dark in some parts reminiscent of the older Disney films. The art style stands out on its own and is an acquired taste on some levels. It isn’t anything overly strange, but does sport some unique design choices. The voice cast all do a great job, with their roles bringing numerous memorable characters to life like Disney is synonymous for. James Woods is the most standout of them all with his turn as Hades bringing yet another memorable villain to life. The hi-def transfer of the film looks perfect bringing all the vibrant colors of this film to life like never before making for a great new release for the film.

Disney has a knack for bringing these iconic characters and stories to life and this film was no different. Besides the hi-def transfer of the film this release also includes numerous special features including a sing-along, music video and ‘making of’ featurette making this another must have for any Disney fan’s collection. Come down from Mount Olympus and grab your copy of Hercules Special Edition when it hits Blu-ray on August 12th.
