Bedknobs and Broomsticks

Disney has been churning out the classics as of late, bringing numerous films out of their famed vault to Blu-ray. While most noted for their animated features, back in the early days Disney churned out a wide variety of ground breaking films and now they are bringing one of these classics to Blu-ray for a whole new generation with 1971s Bedknobs and Broomsticks Special Edition starring Angela Lansbury and David Tomlinson.

If you have never seen this classic live action animated mash-up, the film follows Charlie, Carrie, and Paul Rawlins are sent to live with Eglantine Price, an apprentice witch during WWII. Charlie blackmails Miss Price that if he is to keep her practices a secret, she must give him something, so she takes a bedknob from her late father's bed and places the "famous magic traveling spell" on it, and only Paul can activate it. Their first journey is to a street in London where they meet the headmaster of Miss Price's witchcraft training correspondence school. Miss Price tells him of a plan to find the magic words for a spell known as Substitutiary Locomotion, which brings inanimate objects to life. This is one of those films that could have easily crashed and burned with a story pretty out there and the addition of the animation, but like Mary Poppins it takes a very careful approach to crafting it together and works. These films don’t always hold up all that well, but this one does. There are some really fun moments here that is wrapped around a series situation during wartime making for a unique film. The animation sequences were always great, but the hi-def transfer makes them stand out even more as well as makes the rest of the film look better than ever. They just don’t make movies like this anymore and likely never will, so it makes this release all the better to be able to add to your Disney collection.

Besides the film, this release includes numerous special features including numerous featurettes, deleted and extended songs, deleted and extended scenes and so much more making this a must have for any Disney fan. Activate the traveling spell and grab your copy of Bedknobs and Broomsticks Special Edition when it hits Blu-ray on August 12th.
