The Fox Tucson Theatre Foundation, the Presidio Rotary Club of Tucson and the Saguaro Rotary Club of Tucson co-hosted a charity event starring Diamond Rio. The concert raised money in support of the Fox Theatre Foundation, as well as Sky School and Tucson’s Refugee Focus.
The event took place March 6, 2014 at the Fox Tucson Theatre and started with a VIP reception prior to the show. The show’s headliners made an appearance at the reception before the show.
Diamond Rio took the stage in high gear for an adoring crowd showing their characteristic musicianship, showmanship and distinct harmonies. The opening songs, “Unbelievable” and “Norma Jean Riley” whetted the crowd’s appetite and the band was ready to serve more!
Lead singer, Marty Roe said after the first four songs, “early in our career, we used to think it would be nice to have the problem of having too many hits to sing them all in a single show like other bands. Now, we do have that problem and the only solution is pick some songs and hope that it pleases the audience.”
Midway through the show the emphasis shifted from hits to their Grammy winning Gospel album, “The Reason.” “God Is There”, “This Is My Life" and “I Believe” were the spiritual selections from that album.
The tastiest selection came with their bluegrass renditions of “Layla”, “Walk This Way”, “Carry On” and “Born To Be Wild” medley. This was a very fresh take on rock standards that carried the energy to a new level.
The audience clamored for an encore at the end of the set and the band returned with a spicy “Bubba Hyde.” For a complete set list, click here.
