In the heart of Golden, at 1518 Washington Avenue, you will find an unassuming house that is home to the best Himalayan Restaurant I have yet to discover.
Sherpa House is a Restaurant and Cultural Center, decorated to the nines and overflowing with eclectic charm. From the brightly colored fabric, gold-tinted ornaments, giant yeti and authentic crockery display – you are in for more than just a feast for the taste buds – your meal will transport you to a home in Nepal.
For starters, do not skip the Garlic Naan. It is the best I have ever had and is a generous portion for the nominal $2.75 charge.
Another must is the Chai Tea which is made on site by blending crushed spices from India with cinnamon milk, in traditional Himalayan fashion. It’s a good thing it’s bottomless, because I am hooked!
In the summer I lean towards the Mango Lassi, which is also a well-made version of the popular Indian yoghurt drink. But for those who prefer an alcoholic companion, there is a small but adequate beer, wine and cocktail menu as well.
And then there’s the Curry and very flavorful Tikka Masalas, which come in ornate copper bowls that are piping hot both in temperature and spice if you order it as such. The dishes are plenty to indulge both yourself and all your friends who, once they have tried Sherpa House, will always be eager to share your table.
But the food is really only half of any dining adventure and what really makes the meal at Sherpa House is the genuine hospitality. The servers complete and cultivate the authentic Himalayan experience – you may be seated in Golden – but you will be whisked away to Nepal in heart.
