The bars in lower downtown Denver are mostly known for their nightlife, but they just so happen to be fantastic establishments for day drinking and a meal on a rooftop as well. One of this examiner’s personal favorites is The Tavern for a few very specific reasons.
The view of Coors Field from the rooftop of The Tavern is unstoppable. It’s been locally and nationally recognized for having one of the largest and best rooftop patios in Colorado. There’s no better place to catch a bite after a Rockies game because draft beers are 2-for-1 with a ticket stub and the food just so happens to be pretty stellar. Sure, it’s normal pub food fair, but there’s something hugely satisfying about those burgers after watching a baseball game.
As far as pub grub goes, The Tavern gets 4 out of 5 stars and not just because they offer tater tots as a side, cream cheese as an option for burgers and super fluffy brioche buns. The nachos are at least in the top 5 of smothered chip combos in the city, the mac and cheese is incredible and you can’t go wrong with any of the hot dog choices. All of this tasty food is served sans grease and with minimal guilt. Hands down one of the better establishments to hit up when you have the drunk munchies.
Besides having great drink specials and above average bar food, The Tavern is one of the more popular joints for twenty-somethings to hang out. Live at Five, featuring Slacker & Steve from Alice 105.9 and live music, is hosted on the rooftop in the summer months and ladies night is every Tuesday (free drinks from 9pm on!). Pool tables, shuffleboard and dance parties round out the fun factor.
