Dennis Quad has been around for a long time, but isn’t much known for doing many horror type films. While his latest Beneath the Darkness isn’t quite horror, it is a new type of role for him to tackle. He is a great actor, but will he be able to pull off this more insane type of character?
Beneath the Darkness follows a group of kids who believe the local mortician is up to something far more sinister than just running the local mortuary. When they come face to face with a grotesque, long hidden secret, the mortician will stop at nothing to bury his past. For the most part this is a pretty average film, with a good story and some good acting. What makes this step up a bit more is Quaid. He steps into this role and delivers a truly insane performance. He doesn’t go over the top with it, but more subtle at times and just giving and uncomfortable feeling for the rest. He brings the needed crazy to this character to make this film work. The rest of the cast do a decent enough job to make the movie work. This comes together as a decent thriller with a sinister undertone that feels reminiscent to these kinds of films from the 70’s. It seems that there is little left to the imagination here but with some clever twisting they bring it all home.
This is one of Quaid’s better films in some time and easily his most unique. Without his great character this film could have easily fallen short. We’ve all had that creepy guy in the neighborhood that has all kinds of crazy stories about, but here it brings it to life and will make you think twice before investigating their house.
