If you like good music then I suggest you give Atlanta’s Moontower a serious listen, They seamlessly weave sounds from a multitude of styles creating a finished brand of music that is uniquely their own. Wearing their influences on their sleeve, when you listen to Moontower’s music there is a little bit of the Allman Brothers, Widespread Panic and the Dave Matthews Band in every song. Paying their dues playing live at local venues, festivals and various spots supporting regional and national acts, Moontower has built a very devout following.
On their self titled debut album Moontower has successfully captured everything that is good about their live shows allowing folks to jam to their tunes whenever and where ever they want. Building on a country/folk foundation they infuse blues, rock, funk and soul creating songs about life’s journey. Opening the album is “Run On”, an upbeat track about a love that has run its course. Introspection is a main theme of this record and tunes like “Next In Line”, “Keep On Rollin’ On” and “So Clear” hammers this point home. With ten solid tracks of music occupying the album it is hard to pick a best, but there are two, in my opinion, that stand out. On “Awaiting On You All” the sharp guitar playing catches your ear but it is the nice addition of church organs that transform the song into something special. Then there is “Better Than Nothing”, a smooth guitar driven track that takes a soulful turn with the use of a horn section.
From start to finish Moontower has assembled a record that has few flaws. It is a nice listen whether you want to play it loud or sit and chill out. With a plethora of sounds appearing throughout its entirety they are able to keep them from stepping all over each other and becoming muddied. Each listen produces new discoveries within each track; it is songwriting like this that makes it sound fresh and new with every spin. Like I said earlier, if you like good music then give these guys a listen.
