Local rockers Dean Welch & the Rhythm Method headlined the Cubby Bear Friday night (1/27/12) and brought the heat to an otherwise snowy Wrigleyville.
Four years ago, "Dean Welch & the Rhythm Method started as a way for friends to hold on to what they loved," and they've been rockin' ever since. All of the members are from various parts of the country but it was here at a Chicago college where the band got its start. No strangers to the Chicago bar scene of indie and jam bands, Welch and the boys bring a little something different to the table.
Openers included, Daysleeper, Great Grey Buildings, and Bascom Hill.
The band took to the stage Friday night and instantly got the crowd on their feet. A twangy wall of sound engulfed the bar as its patrons danced and bobbed along. The enthusiastic pops of snare and whaps from the bass guitar kicked things off in high gear. Couples paired off on the dance floor while others stomped and clapped in time with Welch's infectious energy. There wasn't a moment where the lead singer didn't have a smile on his face as his fingers stummed the chords and feet tapped along with the kick of the bass drum.
The guys: Dean Welch (vocals and guitar), Mitch Dalton (guitar), Casey Fictum (drums) and Will Murphy (Bass) played crowd pleasers, 'Until the Devil Knows I'm Dead' and 'Make Your Move' from their upcoming EP 'Soul Piece' which was released in 2011 and is available for purchase on iTunes or Amazon.
Their sound is like an amalgamation of all things blues, country, jazz and a little bit of pop music thrown together to create a soulfully beautiful melody of notes that coalesce with honest lyrics and a live performance that is not to be missed. Each member's talent is showcased but not overdone, and they look as if they've played together forever. The crowd feeds off of their energy as each member looks like he is standing right where he belongs, doing what he loves - which is the best thing to witness. The guys feed off each others energy too, noted Welch, "there's [having] the comfort of four or five guys behind you that always have your back." Check them out now!
