For their DVD release party last night Deadman Flats put together an extraordinary concert, including openers Tyrannosaurus Chicken and Carrie Nation & the Speakeasy. For their own set, Deadman Flats included a number of guests joining them on stage and played a powerhouse show. From start to finish, bluegrass lovers filled the Granada, drinking and dancing to some of Lawrence's best bluegrass acts.
Carrie Nation & the Speakeasy played roughly an hour, holding the crowd's attention with their old-timey American Roots jams. The dixieland circus band had a little extra brass in their lineup last night with a trumpet player complimenting their trombone. The band put on such a fantastic show the crowd was temporarily forlorn to see them stop, but the energetic openers had only just warmed things up for the grand finale.
Deadman Flats played some of their own favorites such as "PBR" and "Die in the Desert" as well as classic covers like "Folsom Prison Blues," and "Old Joe Clark,". The vintage bluegrass and Deadman Flats' own hits blended seamlessly in a set of upbeat, boot-stompin'-good bluegrass that held the audience captive through a long, energetic set.
Fans of Deadman Flats may have caught their show back in early December, when they recorded their set at Liberty Hall. The DVD of that show was made available for folks who paid extra at that concert. That day finally arrived yesterday and the biggest fans of Deadman Flats were ready and waiting to get the DVD "Live at Liberty Hall".
By the finale the Granada had already thinned out a tad, party-people appeared to have run out of steam before the band. A persistant cluster of hardcore fans remained on the dancefloor, demanding an encore, which the band was kind enough to give. The climactic ending to the show left the weary crowd fully satisfied. A perfect ending to a great show.
Deadman Flats will be back near these parts on April 8th, at Mike's Tavern in Kansas City, playing with the Brody Buster Band. After that they will return to their old stomping grounds in Lawrence this May for Festy Fest.
