Rock and roll is a mystery in itself -- what makes a fan love a band, what makes a song into a memory, and why are some guitars just special? Main character Lerxst Johnston is nicknamed for a member of the band Rush, plays the guitar in a Rush cover band, and teaches guitar lessons in Virginia Beach to pass the days. He has a pretty sweet life for a young single guy until a hot girl breaks into his apartment in the middle of the night to kill him with a pillow. One girl leads to another, and a few close shaves and one corpse later, Lerxst ends up on the lam in New York City, desperate to unravel what's happening to him while keeping his family safe. Here's the book trailer, so you can see for yourself: Dead Barchetta.
What makes this book so readable is not the plot or even the rock and roll references, although fans of Rush will definitely find lots to love in this book, and guitarists of all stripes will dig the musical content. The best thing about this book is the main character himself: he's just so inexorably likeable, you'll find yourself looking forward to reading the next chapter, just because you like hanging out with him. So relatable, so endearing, Lerxst charmed this reader with his casual tone, his honesty, and his humor. Oh, and he loves his little old pot-growing granny.
With a slick cover outside and a lot of local color inside, Dead Barchetta would make a fun ride for all you Hampton Roads readers this summer.
