The Hortus Botanicus Amsterdam is one of the oldest botanic gardens in the world. It was founded as a medicinal herb garden in 1638 and is now open to the public. Over 4000 plant species are on display - either in the gardens or in numerous greenhouses. There is also a butterfly house where you can get up close to many flittering varieties.
The Hortus Botanicus (known as "de Hortus") is a great place to spend the afternoon enjoying nature while seeing many endangered and rare plant species. There is a good cafe on-site which offers sandwiches, salads and desserts.
The Hortus is open Monday-Friday from 9am to 5pm and Saturday-Sunday from 10am-5pm. During July and August, doors are open until 7pm. Tickets are 7.50 euros per adult and 3.50 per child (ages 5-14). Not all areas are kid-friendly - keep an eye on them especially in the desert greenhouse where there's a lot of prickly cacti - but they are sure to enjoy the butterflies. Dogs are not allowed.
The Hortus is located in the Plantage area of Amsterdam - within walking distance from Waterlooplein and close to the Artis Zoo. For more information, visit DeHortus.nl or email me!
