Besides Superman there has been no other superhero in the world that has had the impact of Batman. He has appeared in not only comics, but numerous animated series, live action films, books, video games, toys and pretty much anything else you could name. This year marked the 75th anniversary of the Dark Knight detective and DC has been pulling out all the stops with the in production film Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and the new Warner Brothers Batman display. With being a hero come enemies and none have tormented Batman more than the Joker. Now they are releasing the essential collection with the notorious clown prince of crime with the graphic novel The Joker: A Celebration of 75 Years.

Much like the Batman Edition, this collection brings together some of the most important issues in the history of the Joker and plays more like a history book taking the reader on a journey through the past 75 years of the thorn in Batman’s side. Randomly throughout the book it features chapter lead in’s dealing with that particular time and change of the character followed by issues that were important for that particular generation and evolution of where it has come to today. It does a great job of taking the reader along in more of a documentary instead of just a straight comic. Giving you all the information you need or could have wondered to bring you up to speed on every important event or issue that has cemented the Joker as one of the greatest villains of all time over the last 75 years. Included in this collection are stories from BATMAN #1, 5, 25, 32, 85, 163, 251, 427, BATMAN #15 (THE NEW 52), DETECTIVE COMICS #64, 168, 180, 475, 476, 726, 741, 826, DETECTIVE COMICS #1 (THE NEW 52), WORLD’S FINEST COMICS #61, SUPERMAN #9 and BATMAN: LEGENDS OF THE DARK KNIGHT #66 making this the perfect companion piece to the Batman: A Celebration of 75 Years collection.

Over time most villains tend to become mundane and throw away, but after 75 years the Joker has continuously evolved into a true insane force to be reckoned with changing with the times and the creators. While he may disappear for long periods of time there is no doubt he will eventually return and continue to cause chaos in Batman’s world and a threat to all around him.
