With DC Comics much talked about New 52 re-launch there were some surprising titles step it up that you wouldn’t normally expect to work. Stepping out of the pages of Green Lantern, the Red Lanterns have taken center stage bringing an aspect of the Green Lantern universe that you usually don’t get to see. The Red Lanterns: Volume 2: Death of the Red Lanterns graphic novel collects issues 8-12of the ongoing series as well as Stormwatch # 9 giving the reader a chance to witness the ongoing suffering of the Red Lanterns existence.
In this second collected edition Atrocitus is haunted by his past as his first Red Lantern Abysmus is freed from his imprisonment destined to destroy the Red Lanterns as well as all life. Atrocitus must not only face his creation, but now a civil war lead by one of his own Bleez and discover the true purpose of the human Red Lantern Jack Moore. One of the more unique series to come out of the New 52, Red Lanterns continues to give readers a look at those that are normally just the backup aspect of the story. Getting to see what is going on with those that would normally just be a villain to a story arc as the main story really delivers something different than any other book DC has. The story is complex dealing with the torment of these characters on numerous levels but the addition of their fighting against time to live adds another level that shows some weakness in the usually menacing characters. The artwork by Miguel Sepulveda works perfectly for this book delivering bright vibrant details that keep the intensity of this book throughout. The addition to Stormwatch to the story keeps that feel of a standard comic giving them the “heroes” to face off against, but never letting the Red Lanterns fall to the back burner.
Red Lanterns stands out as a great way of bringing some new life to the universe while taking a gamble with characters that are usually meant to just be punching bags for the heroes. This series continues to deliver an inside look to these dark characters full of pure rage and is sure to continue to please. If you haven’t had a chance to check this series out, you are really missing out get, so out there and pick up the Red Lanterns: Volume 2 Death of the Red Lanterns available now as well as Volume 1: Blood and Rage.
