When DC launched the New 52 fans wondered what would happen to some of the older stories and concepts used throughout the years, most notably the Silver Age Justice Society that had been thrown into the world of Earth 2 as a way for them to interact with the modern day universe. Now DC is releasing the latest graphic novel following their adventures in Earth 2: Volume 2 The Tower of Fate collecting issues 7-12 as well as issue 0.
In this story arc the World Army has begun rounding up the Super Heroes of Earth 2, but for what dark purpose? In an attempt to avoid capture, Dr. Fate and Kid Flash find themselves in the powerful magical realm of Nabu, and Wotan, the protector of Nabu, seeks Dr. Fate’s assistance in obtaining a secret locked deep within a tower. The intriguing direction of this series continues with this latest arc taking readers on a mystical journey focusing on Dr. Fate. This story isn’t as strong as the initial arc, but still manages to deliver. It’s interesting where they take these characters in this alternate universe and fun to see the new directions than what you are expecting. Nicola Scott’s artwork is great and delivers the dynamic needed to bring this story to life. It’t rare that they let the lead characters carrying the story be so flawed and struggle these days as opposed to being all powerful, but here there is constant doubt and fear adding a new element to the story of these familiar characters to take them in a direction that really works. This story arc adds numerous levels but never gets too far of the path and makes sure to bring just the right amount of action to keep the fans happy.
This is one of those series that if not handled just right would have easily crashed and burned, but thankfully they took some chances and it comes together great. In addition to the collected issues of the series, this collection also features sketches and penciled pages by Nicola Scott and Yildiray Cinar as well as a cover gallery.
