Even before the premiere of the New 52 the world of Batman was being shaken up, but nothing more so than the debut of the son of Bruce Wayne Damian. What could have been just another new Robin turned into one of the most unique characters to take on the mantle and one that fans seemed to love. When DC decided to shake things up even more by shocking fans and killing off Damian, it sent an emotional blow throughout the Bat family. Now superstar artist Andy Kubert is bringing him back in an all new mini-series Damian: Son of the Batman, but what does that mean the future holds?
Damian: Son of Batman takes place in a future where Damian is very much alive. When tragic events force him to take up the mantle of the Batman he sets out to deliver his own path of vengeance to bring the threat to an end once and for all. The first issue of this series kicks off with a strong opening while still being a major mystery to what is happening. They give a quick passing statement of why Damian is still alive, but with the events that occur in this issue it’s hard to really tell if they are telling an Elseworld’s type tale or letting us know of some other story that may be going to happen in the Bat-verse. For those that thought Damian was a badass when he was 10, this new older version is even more so and sports another new version of the Robin look with this one being one of the coolest to date. This issue delivers just enough information and action to suck you in without ever really telling you anything. Kubert’s art is great as always really bringing this story to life.
As if the story it is telling wasn’t already mind-blowingly cool, they end it with an immediate cliffhanger twist that will make you eager for more. If you are a fan of Damian, Batman, or Kubert then this is a must read that delivers everything you want in a great comic.
