With the DC Comics New 52 re-launch not only did their flagship titles they added numerous new ones and revamped other existing. Of all the characters none have made more of an impact in comics than Batman and the same goes for the New 52 re-launch. The series aptly titled Batman was one of the many to get the reboot featuring the creative team of Scott Snyder, Jonathan Glapion and Greg Capullo.
Batman Volume 1: The Court of Owls follows Batman as he investigates a series of brutal murder with him as the prime suspect. When everything leads to a group thought only to be legend known as the Court of Owls, Batman must put his detective skills to the test as he infiltrates their organization to uncover the truth, but may be more than his sanity can handle. Much like the other new variations of the New 52 Batman titles, this one delivers on every level. Instead of just rehashing the same old villains from the Batman Universe Capullo and Snyder have developed an entire new secret organization that not only bring a new level to the mythology of the caped crusader but promises to be something with the potential to deal long lasting effects to eh DC Universe. The story is excellent taking on the detective mystery aspect as opposed to the straight action of most comics of its kind. We get to see a version of Batman that just doesn’t come along very often whose put in a vulnerable state unlike we’re used to seeing him. As usual Capullo’s art is amazing. His attention to detail and character design is always great and is no different here. As if his standard pages weren’t great enough, he takes some creative directions in some of the page layouts that add a unique creative look while effectively bringing the reader into what the characters are experiencing.
This beautiful hardcover collection not only features the first 7 issues of this great series, it also features some beautiful looks at some of the penciled layout pages and sketches by Capullo as well as scripts by Snyder. As if this wasn’t enough it also delivers a variant cover gallery from Jim Lee, Ethan Van Sciver, Gary Frank, and more.
