Of all the celebrities in the industry none have had such a strange career as David Hasselhoff. His most notable fame came from his TV series Knight Rider and Baywatch, but he has since become a reality show judge not to mention a huge singing career in Germany. Now he is stepping back in front of the camera as a villain in his latest film Dancing Ninja, but could this movie possibly have anything more than a silly title to offer?
Dancing Ninja follows an orphaned boy who dreams of being a ninja who arrives in Hollywood to try and find his birth parents and gets mixed up in a crime. This movie lives up to the ridiculous nature of it’s name and not necessarily in a good way. The film plays like Beverly Hills Ninja meets 3 Ninjas with a bit of Surf Ninjas thrown in for good measure. While this could have worked on some strange level this film stumbles on the dance floor pretty much throughout. There are a few moments here and there that sports some pretty good martial arts, but beyond that it is just plain ridiculous. Now to be clear it clearly is not trying to be anything but goofy cheese, but it just doesn’t offer any laughs no matter how hard it tries. The one entertaining thing to watch, but still in a bad way is Hasselhoff himself. His over the top performance steps out of fun cheese and just plain bad. Had they ditched the dancing aspect and just went for the ninja only it wouldn’t have changed the movie hardly at all and would have made for a much better film instead of the mess that it turned into.
This will probably find an audience with younger audiences which it was surely made for, but with some smarter decision regarding the story it could have worked on such a bigger scale. If you plan to check this out, just go in with low expectations and hope you can make it off the dance floor unscathed.
