The spirit of The Grateful Dead was alive and kicking last Friday night in Milwaukee at The Pabst Theater as Dark Star Orchestra worked their way through a stellar musical exploration and unique interpretation of The Dead's September 14th, 1988 Madison Square Garden concert. Rhythm guitarist and vocalist Rob Eaton mentioned to the crowd that while they had played The Pabst Theater four or five times in the past, this was the first time they had sold out the venue.
Eaton was joined onstage by Jeff Matson on lead guitar and vocals, Rob Barraco on keyboards and vocals, Kevin Rosen on bass and vocals, Dino English on drums and percussion, Rob Koritz on drums and percussion, and, for the last two songs of the night, Lisa Mackey on vocals.
To simply say that Dark Star Orchestra is a Grateful Dead cover band misses the point and sells the band short of their mission. Dark Star Orchestra is an experience and a recreation of The Grateful Dead, and on any given night the audience can be transported to one of the many eras that The Dead performed in. DSO offers the audience a chance to experience a Grateful Dead concert from the past in a fresh and musically meaningful way that is otherwise unavailable.
