The film starts out Daniel Barrett leaving his son's 6th birthday party. His wife, Lacy, is not happy with him as he rests in front of his computer looking for work.
As Daniel searches for work, his wife tries to sell as many houses as she can in order to keep the household afloat financially. Then strange things begin to happening in the Barrett household.
Sam Barrett begins talking about "The Sandman" with his brother, Jesse. Jesse tells Sam that "The Sandman" wasn't real. He tells Sam that he needs to believe that. He tells Sam that he would never allow anyone to hurt him and not to be afraid of anything, especially the dark. Sam falls asleep but has a nightmare.
Lacy goes downstairs after being awakened during sleep. She notices the door open in the foyer as she arrives downstairs. As she closes and locks the door, she walks into the kitchen and visualizes food and trash all of the kitchen floor. Sam makes his way downstairs and scares his mother while she takes in this horrible mess. She asks Sam if he knew who done this. Sam shakes his head yes and tells her that the "Sandman" did it. His mother looks completely baffled.
The next day a police officer pays the Barrett home a visit after a report was made about vandalism and an intruder being in their house while they slept. He asks them if in fact they had any enemies or if the kids might have done it as a retaliatory measure. They both look baffled again and are completely taken aback. The police officer tells the Barrett family that they need to invest in an alarm system and that it is money well spent to protect their family.
The Barrett family invest in the alarm system recommended by the police officer. The vandalism continues and strange things begin to emerge and happen to the Barrett family. Three flocks of birds smash into the windows of the Barrett home. The agency is called in to investigate and they make a very eerie discovery. The investigator tells Lacy that it was as if something was drawing the birds to the home. Lacy thanks her and goes to do a walk through for a house she is selling. She freaks out, she can't talk or communicate and begins to smash her head on the sliding glass doors. She loses six hours of time after this incident. Her boss calls and tells her to take some time off due to the stress with her financial situations at home. She tries to protest the issue but fails immensely. http: www.youtube.com/darkskies
Daniel arrives home with good news as he tells Lacy he got a job. She finally smiles at him. After a nice night together, Lacy awakens to find Daniel outside and he is in a complete zombie state. As she calls his name, he has a severe nose bleed. After this, they finally agree to see this specialist they found on google about some sort of alien visitation. http: www.darkskies.com
The specialist tells them both that they and their family have been marked by the "Greys" (the aliens). They ask him what they can do and he tells them to fight them with everything that they have in them and to protect their family. He also tells them that the "Greys" will attempt to kidnap the first family member that had seem them. Daniel and Lacy tell him that it was their youngest son, Sam. He tells them both that Sam is the one that is in the most danger. Like all parents, they fail to interpret all of the evidence between their two children. The ending is the best part, otherwise I would have given this film a lower score.
In my opinion, this film should never had been compared to "Insidious". This was a stretch. This films gets a 3 star review from this movie critic. However, with the budget that they had, the special effects were good.
