Dark Reckoning by J.E. Taylor

I’d like to introduce a new author and a wonderfully chilling mystery/thriller. Taylor is able to transport the reader into a fresh and different FBI/Serial journey of fiction. Dark elements are about and cause a thread of deep dread and tension throughout the book, leaving the reader never quite sure what direction the plot will curve ahead.

From the book: A sadistic killer stalks the secluded college town of Brooksfield, New Hampshire. With bodies piling up and rumors of the murders being part of sacrificial hazing rituals, the FBI plants Special Agent Steve Williams in a fraternity at Brooksfield University. His investigation takes a ninety degree turn into the bizarre when he’s introduced to Jennifer, a clairvoyant co-ed who swears the killer isn’t human.

Steve considers the plausibility of the extraordinary, the unspeakable, even the inconceivable when his notebook starts bleeding cryptic messages. Messages that indicate Jennifer is at the heart of the darkness in Brooksfield.

When she describes her latest vision, a trail of violent deaths, including his, Steve asks the million-dollar question: Is Jennifer trying to help . . . or is she actually the one responsible?

My thoughts:

Deaths and disappearances seem to be increasing in this small town, with no clues and only the shredded remains of the victims found scattered deep in the nearby woods; local police are baffled.

Our heroine, Jennifer, has returned to Brooksfield to attend the University this fall and is rooming with her friend, Tracey, off campus. Tracy and her fraternity boyfriend, Bill, have decided to bring along a friend and try to set Jennifer up on a blind date. After her fiancé’s tragic death over a year ago, Jennifer still hasn’t met someone new or even worthwhile. Little do the match makers Bill and Tracy know that Jennifer isn’t blind to mystery man’s existence, in fact, she’s known Steve Williams all her life. Jennifer wonders though, what is Steve doing here now? And why is he attending Brooksfield?

I really enjoyed this book and can’t wait to dive into Taylor’s next novel I have waiting, Survivor Games. Please check out Dark Reckoning and look J.E. Taylor up!
