Monsters & Other Stories

Creator Gustavo Duarte burst onto the Dark Horse Comics scene with the all new graphic novel Monsters! & Other Stories. The book contains three separate stores with each bringing a unique story to life in one of most original ways to date, but does it work?

In the first story Có!, an alien abduction disarms a gentle farmer, followed by Birds, in which two business partners run from fate only to find themselves hopelessly unable to change the future and finally in Monsters! oversized beasts wreak havoc on cities in the tradition of Godzilla and King Kong. While these stories may not feel all that special on the surface the execution is brilliant. First and foremost the entire 152 page book is done with no words at all. Every aspect of this story is purely visual and Duarte is clearly a master of it. His artwork is not only unique and amazing to look at, but is able to bring these stories together without ever needing a single word. There have been other stories like this that tried and failed to tell the story with visuals alone, but none have been able to capture the beautiful brilliance of Duarte’s work here. His character designs and art style is amazing and harkens back to a more classic style with a modern flair. His work could and should be transition into animation that will surely be another brilliant piece of work. His simplistic attention to detail is a visual feast to the eyes that keeps you hoping for more. While the artwork is brilliant alone, the choice of using one single color of aqua-green like tone along with the black and white aspect makes the visuals pop even more.

This is easily one of the most creatively brilliant works to come along in some time. Gustavo Duarte is true master story teller and an amazing artist that we will hopefully be seeing for years to come.
