Dantes Boneyard, Lost Souls, King Thick, and All Else Fails playing together on one stage in San Diego is nothing less than explosive. Sullen Musik was out in force Sat. Jan. 11th at JT’s in Mission Valley, San Diego, CA. If you missed the show here is a quick recap for you.
The venue, JT’s, is a cozy tavern/pub that had the remaining parts of its roof ripped off it's partially covered outdoor dining and venue space. At the start of the night the back room started to go from spacious to asses to elbows tight. First on the floor for this crowd of music lovers was Lost Souls. This Hip Hop, Rock, Reggae, Rap duo came out strong. Froggy and Lucky did what they do best, dropping lyrics like bombs. Usually this duo is accompanied by a dj. However, this show was a little different because special guest dj/vocalist Nicky Daze from the band Better Daze joined in on the fun with Lucky & Froggy. It was one of the best performances I have seen from Lost Souls and I have seen them a number of times. If you want music that will make you get up to get down, this is a show to see.
King Thick is a 3 piece rock band from the OC and were nothing less than awesome. The drummer hit so hard he broke a drum skin...now that is a hard hitter. The band has a sound with elements of The Beetles, Primus and a pinch of Gangster Rap. They melt all the sounds together to give the fans a hard, in your face show. They also interact with the crowd, making the fans feel part of the show. If you want a show that is technical in sound quality, hard hitting, and with a comedy touch this is your band. I have seen them a few times now and will keep them on my list of shows to hit.
All Else Fails; one word sums them up - Awesome. They describe themselves as a Rock band. I agree with that but would also say that they have some slight elements of hip/hop. No matter how you label them you need to see them. Every-time this band takes the stage they rip it up. High energy, high impact and body moving music. That is what just some of what an AEF show will give a fan. If you have not seen them put them on your list of shows to hit.
Dantes Boneyard is the band that will take you to your happy place. Smooth sounds with a mix of Rock/Punk/Reggae that all come together for the perfect sound that is Dantes Boneyard. Some songs will take you to the beach for the day to just chill while others will get you up and get your booty shaking. Want a show that is always fun where it is feels like you are hanging with friends and not just going to a show? Dantes Boneyard is your show.
The night did not stop there. Joe Walsh (Joe Ded Art) was on sight, turning a blank canvas into a whimsical Joe Ded masterpiece as the music bumped in the background. Not only did he do the art at the show, he set up on the floor in the middle of the crowd. As he worked he talked to friends and fans and painted away. He had an added surprise for the night as he read a poem done in true Joe Ded Style. Check him out and see art driven by music live when you see him do his thing.
As always shows can not happen without the people behind the scenes. Huge thanks to Jae Rose, Lunch Box, Martin Rodriguez, & Cristina Shaw for putting this on. It was truly an explosive night. Also props to Sullen Musik for their support of the great bands that are springing up across the fertile SoCal landscape. Support local music and art and see you at the next show.
