China takes a turn at a classic film. "Dangerous Liaisons" has been remade by "Eastern Light Films" and distributed by "WellGo" who has brought many Asian films to the American market.
Starring, Cecilia Cheung, Ziyi Zhang, Shawn Dou, Lisa Lu and Dong-gun Jang, this film has a strong cast. Jang starred in "My Way" which is one of the best of the new influx of Asian films.
The synopsis (see below) is very close to the original film, which was French entitled "Les Liaisons dangereuses' and was released in 1960.
Synopsis from IMDb:
In Shanghai, an aging socialite's infatuation with her ex-boyfriend manifests itself as a risky game, where her former lover agrees to seduce, then abandon a naive young woman.
This film is set in Shanghai, which was starting to experience protests about their connection to the Republic of China. The sets are beautiful as are the costumes the women wear, even though all the women wear the same color under garments.
The acting is suburb, with Dong-gun Jang being outstanding as the devious Xie Yifan. His good looks and great acting will take him far, even in the U.S. where many are reluctant to watch a foreign film.
"Dangerous Liaisons" is an excellent film with almost all scenes in Chinese. There are a few sentences here and there in English.
"Dangerous Liaisons" was released on DVD last Tuesday, Feb. 12 2013. It is also available ondemand.
