Thanks to books like “Twilight” and television shows like “The Vampire Diaries” on the CW Network, watching modern day vampire dramas continue to be a hobby these days. So September 2 marks the release date of the first season of the CW Network vampire drama “The Originals” on DVD ($59.98 SRP) and DVD/Blu-Ray combo pack ($69.97 SRP). Featuring 22 episodes spanning over 900 minutes, “The Originals” is sure to appeal to modern day vampire drama fans or people inclined to watch modern day vampire dramas with said fans on the television.
“The Originals” is a spin-off of “The Vampire Diaries,” a hit CW Network television series about vampires that I never really got into. Using some of the same characters of “The Vampire Diaries,” “The Originals” details the adventures of the Original vampire family as they attempt to retake the French Quarter of New Orleans—the town that they original helped build centuries ago. Starring Joseph Morgan as vampire/werewolf hybrid Klaus; Daniel Gillies as his brother Elijah; and Claire Holt as their sister Rebekah; “The Originals” aims to tell a supernatural dramatic tale of family power struggles while the CW Network hopes that “The Vampire Diaries” lightning strikes twice.
The power struggle is an interesting one as characters develop. The New Orleans melting pot setting is an imaginative setting for vampires though I personally prefer voodoo as the supernatural force that founded New Orleans. But if you’re already a fan of “The Vampire Diaries,” then “The Originals” should fit in with your adoration of them and CW Network programming.
Bonus features on the DVD/Blu-Ray combo pack include creator commentary for the pilot episode, a couple of panels from Comic-Con and PaleyFest, a creator’s journey about creating the show, a writer’s perspective of creating the alternate history that blends fact with vampire fiction, a montage covering “The Vampire Diaries,” and deleted scenes. Season 2 of “The Originals” is scheduled to begin airing on the CW Network on October 6.
