With its debut in 1980 Friday the 13th changed the world of the horror forever and has been going strong ever since despite a few hits and misses along the way. The character Jason Voorhees has become a horror and cinematic icon that has been turned into various merchandise, comics, video games, and more. There have been a few behind the scenes featurettes and documentaries about the films and TV series, but nothing compares to the latest and most comprehensive documentary to date Crystal Lake Memories: The Complete History of Friday the 13th.
As if the name didn’t already explain it all this documentary takes an in depth look at the entire franchise spanning all 12 films and the TV series from those involved. Besides Kevin Bacon who starred in the original film the most famous star to break out of the franchise is Corey Feldman who not only makes an appearance during the segment on Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter, but also serves as the narrator to the entire film. This insanely awesome documentary is divided into chapters focusing on each film as well as the TV series and runs a staggering 7 hours long not including the 4 hours of bonus features. While this may seem like a long time it is so well put together with interviews, behind the scenes stories, and clips from the films telling the tales from conception to release that I flies by. Each chapter is more interesting than the next giving some fresh insight to why certain things were done and the present feeling after all this time that will give you some new found respect for not only the classic great films, but also the ones that are not so great. This film is so well put together that it works great whether you are a fan of the series or not, but was clearly made with a true passion for this awesome series. It features interviews with about 150 various cast and crew members across the franchise with some who have never been in on screen interviews before. Included in these cool series of interviews are Kane Hodder, Robert Englund, Derek Mears, Wes Craven, Tom Savini, Sean S. Cunningham and obviously so many more.
There has never been a documentary experience like this before and seriously doubt anyone could do a better job bringing these stories together. Any fan of the series will surely find this to be an engaging and fun trip behind the scenes of their beloved Voorhees legacy like never before and should not be missed. Filled with all the nudity, gore and fun as the movies themselves Crystal Lake Memories is the definitive documentary of Friday the 13th and easily one of the most entertaining trips through horror history to date.
