“When life hands you lemons, the best thing to do is make a rum-soaked Tropical Lemonade.” - Leanne Shear and Tracey Toomey, Cocktail Therapy
Life is full of surprises. Unfortunately, not all surprises are good. When life throws you an unpleasant curveball, a little cocktail therapy might just be the right prescription. But what type of cocktail does life’s little unpleasantry call for? According to authors Leanne Shear and Tracey Toomey there is a perfect cocktail to alleviate a negative life event. From co-worker conundrums to infidelious partners to family members who don’t respect your boundaries, Cocktail Therapy offers up a witty prescription for life’s many crises.
Authors Shear and Toomey have heard it all, having bartended for years, serving up cocktails with an advice chaser to woe-stricken patrons. From champagne cocktails to stiff whiskey drinks, Cocktail Therapy prescribes the perfect cocktail for a variety of unpleasantries. Written for a female audience, the scenarios described are entertaining, yet (unfortunately) relatable. My only gripe was the overabundance of “girly” drinks prescribed. When I’m stranded at an airport due to a flight cancellation the last thing I want is a White Wine Spritzer; give me the hard stuff to alleviate the frustration of not only the unexpected delay, but the overpriced drinks.
Regardless, Cocktail Therapy is still a fun read, punctuated with useful suggestions and fun facts like how to prepare for an unexpected hookup (which is kind of an oxymoron) and how to best deal with a hangover (though they overlooked the healing powers of bacon, tsk, tsk). If you’re looking for a simple cocktail to ease a not-so-simple problem with a dash of gender stereotypical joviality, Cocktail Therapy is worth a read. Highly recommended for the dramatic.
