Lena Corwin's Made By Hand: A collection of projects to print, sew, weave, dye, knit or otherwise create from Abrams|STC Craft.
Corwin turned her Brooklyn brownstone into a studio in 2009, and her design and DIY classes took off.
In this book, Lena curates the “best of” a collection of twenty-six studio classes, beautifully photographed by Maria Alexandra Vettese and Stephanie Congdon Barnes. The classes are offered by a variety of instructors and the projects vary, as well as the level of difficulty.
In a day and age when technology has bound up us, this book is a breath of fresh air. The instruction is well-documented with beautiful photography, contains a thorough checklists of supplies, and instructions in plain English.
Of course there is basic knitting, sewing, and crocheting but there are also projects you might not have thought of tackling at home such as, making olive oil soap, creating brass and silk jewelry, and batik-dyeing. Coiled bowls may harken back to your junior high home economics class but these coiled bowls are quite lovely and sophisticated in both texture and design.
Start with the Rotary-printed Cloth Napkins (using rolling pins and foam sheets) and progress by grazing through a nice array of handmade projects.
So much is disposable in our world; it is time to focus and slow down by making a craft by hand that will be therapy for your soul.
