The Christian movie "Courageous" was released to theaters on September 30, 2011 and will release on DVD and Blu-ray on January 17, 2012. The title "Courageous" is an obvious reference to the four policemen the movie is about, with a deeper meaning involving the courage involved in being a hands-on, Godly father. The movie was produced by Sherwood Pictures, a ministry of Sherwood Baptist Church in Albany GA, in association with Provident Films, a division of Nashville-based Provident Music Group.
Albany police deputies Adam Mitchell (Alex Kendrick), Nathan Hayes (Ken Bevel), Shane Fuller (Kevin Downes), and rookie David Thomson (Ben Davies), are all fathers. Two are married, one divorced, and one the father of a child out of wedlock.
After the devastating loss of his young daughter, Officer Mitchell turns to his pastor for help. As Mitchell is led to the Bible for answers, he discovers how far he is from being a Godly husband and father. As he makes a commitment to his family, he asks the other officers to hold him accountable, but instead, they join him in making a "Resolution" to honor God in every aspect of family. However, not all the fathers/officers will choose to keep their commitments with painful consequences.
Pointing to mounting statistics from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services related to the importance of fathers to their children, the "Courageous" producers felt compelled to deal with the topic of fathers by studies showing:
- good father-child relationships produce children who are more secure and less likely to suffer from depression.
- children with fathers at home enter school at higher levels of academic readiness.
- homes with mothers and fathers present produce children who earn more A grades and are less likely to have to repeat a grade.
Decent acting, a good plot, humor, drama, and family values earn "Courageous" high marks.
