Conspiracy Set Review White Cards
Okay, so I know this is just the summer fun set but I have to talk about this set. I love drafting and I'm a Cube builder which means this set was made for me as a player. I Cube at least twice a week with my buddies and I'm addicted to Limited tournaments on MTGO. The simple fact that we get to play with this set is just blowing my mine. Now even if you aren't a big time drafted this set still has some powerful cards you are going to want for Commander, Legacy, and casual. This set has some $ cards in it so I'll be make notes about value on the cards as well. That said, let's dive into the set.
Ajani's Sunstriker – WW – Creature – Cat Cleric – C – Lifelink. 2/2. What can I say, sometimes you just need a 2/2 lifelink creature to equip with gear or suit up with enchantments. The fact that there is the Conspiracy in the set that lets you name this common dork so you get a 3/3 lifelinker for WW makes this even better.
Apex Hawks – 2W – Creature – Bird – C – Multikicker 1W. Flying. Apex Hawks enters the battlefield with a +1/+1 counter on it for each times it was kicked. 2/2. In Zendikar Limited these were awesome as you could either get then at face value on turn three or they became even better in the late game. Just a good flier to have for a Draft deck.
Brago's Representative – 2W - Creature – Human Advisor – C – While voting, you get an additional vote. ¼. One of the things I love in this set is the Will of the Council mechanic. I think it is going to make games fun as well as allow a player to build a really awesome political deck for Commander.
Council Guardian – 5W – Creature – Giant Soldier – U – Will of the Council – When Council Guardian enters the battlefield, starting with you, each player votes for blue, black, red, or green. Council Guardian gains protection from each color with the most votes or tied for most votes. 5/5. Speaking of the WotC, oh I just noticed that Will of the Council = Wizards of the Coast. It's like we are playing as R&D. Nice. I like that this is one of those cards that changes game to game so it never is truly the same and you get to kind of nudge who this creature is going to be attacking or block by giving it protection from the two colors of the current game leader's creatures. I like this a lot.
Council's Judgment – 1WW – Sorcery – R – Will of the Council – starting with you each player votes for a nonland permanent you don't control. Exile each permanent with the most votes or tied for the most votes. LOLS. This is so epic when playing a politics game. This is good enough for Legacy as a you can just three mana kill anything in a two player game which is why it has a $20 price tag. Also because this doesn't target it can answer True-Name Nemesis.
Courier Hawk – 1W – Creature – Bird – C- Flying, vigilance. ½. Just a flier that gets better if you have the anthem conspiracy.
Custodi Soulbinders - 3W – Creature – Human Cleric – R – Custodi Souldbinders enters the battlefield with X +1/+1 counters on it, where X is the number of other creatures on the battlefield. 2W, remove a +1/+1 counter from Custodi Soulbinders: Put a 1/1 white Spirit token creature with flying onto the battlefield. 0/0. I like that we have some token maker creatures in the set as the anthem conspiracy works great with tokes as does the paradise bird conspiracy. Getting to drop this and making a mana spirit every turn is going to be awesome. Currently this is a $1.50 rare that I think will drop down in price so I'm not going to be rare drafting this.
Custodi Squire – 4W – Creature – Spirit Cleric – C – Flying. Will of the Council – When Custodi Squire enters the battlefield, starting with you, each player votes for an artifact, creature, or enchantment card in your graveyard. Return each card with the most votes to your hand. 3/3. I just thought of nasty things to do with blink effects and player control spells. This imprinted on Mimic Vat with Tron online. Four mana to activate mindslaver, then on their turn three mana to put a copy of this in bring back Mindslayer with both your vote and theirs, and just keep repeating till you win.
Doomed Travler – W – Creature – Human Soldier – C – When Doomed Traveler dies, put a 1/1 white Spirit token onto the battlefield. 1/1. One of the best white one-drops ever printed. If I'm in white during these drafts I will take this all day.
Glimmerpoint Stag - 2WW – Creature – Elk – U – Vigilance. When Glimmerpoint Stag enters the battlefield, exile another target permanent. Return that card to the battlefield under its owner's control at the beginning of the next end step. 3/3. Blinks there blockers or blinks your enters the battlefield dork, either way this is an all-star of white decks in draft.
Guardian Zendikon – 2W – Enchantment – Aura – C – Enchant land. Enchanted land is a 2/6 white Wall creature with defender. It's still a land. When enchanted land dies, return that card to its owner's hand. To tell the true I was never a big fan of the Zendikon cycle in Limited. Sure, if you kill the land it just gets bounced to there hand, but that is still a big tempo shift. I would rather just pass this and take a removal spell that now basically says, “bounce target land.”
Intangible Virtue – 1W – Enchantment – U – Creature tokens you control get +1/+1 and have vigilance. So good is was banned in block. With all the Spirit token makers in this set you are going to want this if you are drafting white. Get two of these into play and all those 1/1 spirits just became 3/3s.
Kor Chant – 2W – Instant – C – All damage that would be dealt this turn to target creature you control by a source of your choice is dealt to another target creature instead. Yup, they reprinted the Chant. This is just so awesome when your opponent attacks with some over the top large fatty that doesn't have trample and you just block it a 1/1 and then cast this to watch the fatty implode. Also a good answer to damage based removal in Draft.
Moment of Heroism – 1W – Instant – C – Target creature gets +2/+2 and gains lifelink until end of turn. Just a good combat trick for Limited, moving on.
Noble Templar – 5W – Creature – Human Cleric Soldier – C – Vigilance. Plainscycling 2. 3/6. Because of the Limited space in the set they wanted to give us some good mana fixing without giving us too good mana fixing, so we got a cycle of land cycling cards to help us fix our mana for three colored decks.
Pillarfield Ox – 3W – Creature – Ox – C – 2/4. And the cow is just a 2/4 for Limited, enjoy.
Pride Guardian – W – Creature – Cat Monk – C – Defender. Whenever Pride Guardian blocks, you gian 3 life. 0/3. Just another lifelink dork for Limited. Now if we had a card that did things when you gained life in this set that would be awesome, but I don't think we do. So limited stall junk.
Pristine Angel – 4WW – Creature – Angel – M – Flying. As long as Pristine Angel is untapped, it has protection from artifacts and all colors. Whenever you cast a spell, you may untap Pristine Angel. 4/4. A nice dork that wants you to cast combat tricks. Still as a blocker this will eat just about any other creature that gets in front of it. Also it's on the list of money cards with a current tag of $3 for the non-foil. So if you see a foil take it for value.
Reya Dawnbringer – 6WWW – Legendary Creature – Angel – R – Flying. At the beginning of your upkeep you may return target creature card from your graveyard to the battlefield. 4/6. Another card that is currently at $3 for non-foil. In limited I didn't see many self mill cards so this is going to be something you need to really work to draft around. Still with all the life gaining in white you might be able to stall out until you get this into play. Once you do, enjoy winning.
Rousing of Souls – 2W – Sorcery – C – Parley – Each player reveals the top card of his or her library. For each nonland card revealed this way, you put a 1/1 white Spirit creature token with flying onto the battlefield. Then each player draws a card. Nice, more token markers in white. Dang I really want to just draft all the Spirit token makers and the anthem cards and just bash face all day.
Rout – 3WW – Sorcery – R – You may cast Rout any time you could cast an instant if you pay 2 more to cast it. Destroy all creatures. They can't be regenerated. Yup, every Limited format that is this cood needs to have a wrath effect. Also a $4 card.
Silverchase Fox – 1W – Creature – Fox – C – 1W, sacrifice Silverchase Fox: Exile target enchantment. 2/2. Have we seen many busted Enchantments yet, yes, and there are more to come. Either you take this to keep others from blowing up you Virtues and win the mirror.
Soulcatcher – 1W – Creature – Bird Soldier – U – Flying. Whenever a creature with flying dies, put a +1/+1 counter on Soulcatcher. 1/1. Yup, if you are drafting mono-spirits you should be taking this card as well.
Stave Off – W – Instant – C – Target creature gains protection from the color of your choice until end of turn. Just a great combat trick for Limited. Either you bait a very back block or you basically swing through for lethal when they only have one color of blockers.
Swords to Plowshares – W – Instant – U – Exile target creature. Its controller gains life equal to its power. Best removal spell ever printed in my opinion. The fact that there are foils in this set means that seeing a shiny one of these means you take it for the $$$. the non-foils in this set are $4 each.
Unquestioned Authority – 2W – Enchantment – Aura – U – Enchant creature. When Unquestioned Authority enters the battlefield, draw a card. Enchanted creature has protection from creatures. Lols, basically you just put this on a fatty and win the game. Or you can combo it with....
Valor Made Real – W – Instant – C – Target creature can block any number of creatures this turn. Yup, nice alpha swing here let me block everything with my 1/1 flier. Now it's my turn and I alpha swing back, GG? I love this combat trick in Limited.
Vow of Duty – 2W – Enchantment – Aura – U – Enchant creature. Enchanted creature gets +2/+2, has vigilance, and can't attack you or a planeswalker you control. The vows first arrived in the Commander decks and I have to say they are really good in multiplayer games. Being about to tell that fatty your opponent controls to leave you alone and go attack the other guy is really nice.
Wakestone Gargoyle – 3W – Creature – Gargoyle – U – Defender, flying. 1W: Creatures you control with defender can attack this turn as though they didn't have defender. ¾. The cool thing is that this allows all you walls to attack when you pay 1W. Still it's kind of slow but in Draft it will get there for you.
Well, I have to say that white is looking sexy. I do like to build control style decks in Draft. Then again that all depends on getting something awesome in pack-one that will force me into white. I'm thinking that the card that will make me want to draft white is going to be a foil Swords every time. But the color I want to be in most is next up. Join me next time for the blue cards.
