Acme Theatrical Productions drops two short plays into your lap.
Jim Strope’s Pounding delivers Sam and Pete, two hit men posing as carpet-salesmen, who have job-related issues.
Larry Rekow constructs Pete as a professional, no-nonsense, tradesman. Get the job done on-time, under budget and hit the bar. Rekow is intelligent and tough as he cross-examines Sam, penetrating the smoke screen of Sam’s personality.
Wayne Roadie creates Sam, the senior man accustomed to dominating his relationships. Roadie plays it tough in every detail, navigating his difficult transformation beneath the steady gaze of Pete.
Under Irving Schulman’s direction, the distinctly-drawn characters are in relentless in-your-face opposition, an intense emotional battle magnified by the intimate space of Shotwell Studios theatre.
In sharp contrast to Pounding, IrishH Higgins Clearer is delivers three people who have a more civilized approach to problem solving. Jesse W. Blanca plays Piers, an impetuous, volatile and powerful man who wants everything out of life and he wants it on his own terms.
Bruna Palmeiro and Noni Galloway play the women who construct a playful alliance for their own amusement and to civilize Piers. They play with language and gender and conventional roles to build their relationship, creating a familiar atmosphere for cast and audience, and together we prepare for the re-entry of Piers.
I recommend sitting in the front row, getting as close to the action as you can without actually being on stage.
Conflicted is performed three times Friday November 18th at 8 PM, Saturday November 19th at 8 PM, and Sunday November 20th at 7 PM at Shotwell Studios, 3252-A 19th Street, near Shotwell, 4 blocks from the 16th and 24th Street BART stations. http://www.catchynametheatre.org/acme/
