Most pop singers' live shows include a myriad of dancers and an elaborate stage production, but for Swedish pop star Robyn, all that was needed to wow the crowd was her infectious energy.
As her band appeared onstage in matching white lab outfits, one could have easily concluded that a overly dramatic show would ensue, but instead the Dallas audience was treated to an entertaining and lively gig.
The Swedish pop singer thankfully never relied on a distracting stage production or overly dramatic lighting. Besides a large windmill-like fan on both sides of the stage, the area was did not include any bells and whistles. Even though several keyboards and synthesizer equipment were used, it was refreshing to hear an actual drum set instead of a drum machine.
Although Robyn's music is not hugely different from most of the current dance/pop music, but the impressive amount of energy she put into her performance and smart lyrics set her apart from other pop artists such as Katy Perry or Lady Gaga.
There's usually a lull period in most concerts, but that wasn't the case for Robyn's sincere fans. They happily sang along to every tune. Whistles and yells could be heard as she danced enthusiastically throughout her set, and the audience delightfully danced along. She even incorporated a snippet of "Dancing Queen" near the end of her second encore.
Even though Robyn is more of an underground singer in America, South Side Music Hall was suprisingly packed. People arriving right before Robyn's set were trying to squeeze between the outlying crowd and the customers waiting in line at the bar. Hopefully Robyn fans will be able to experience her live somewhere larger than a club venue after she supports Katy Perry on a North American tour in the summer. Perry should also watch out, considering the fact that Robyn is one entertaining performer.
