Compression calf sleeves for trail running: RecoFiT review

The RecoFiT compression components calf sleeves weren't specifically developed for trail running, but they're perfect for long training runs in the mountains.

They were created by Susan Eastman Walton, a cyclist and runner who was looking for something to ease the pain of her shin splints.   Her husband, a sportswear manufacturer, helped her develop the sleeves.

While much has been written about whether compression technology actually boosts performance, I reviewed the RecoFiT compression components calf sleeves from the perspective of someone who enjoys the feel of compression socks and sleeves while running.

Compression:  Compared to other sleeves I've tried, the RecoFiT compression components provide the firmest compression.  They give a noticable amount of squeeze once you get them on, but because of the snug fit, they're also a little more difficult to pull up over your calves.

Sizing:  RecoFiT sleeves come in XS, S, M, LG, and XL and sizing is based on the circumference of your calf size at it's largest point.  A small, for example, is for calves that measure 12 to 13 inches and a medium is for calves that measure 13 to 15 inches.  For compression sleeves and socks I would usually advise you to size down if you're between sizes, but with the RecoFiTs I would definitely size up.

RecoFit sleeves are also left and right specific, which makes them have a more custom fit and feel than some calf sleeves.  Be sure to check the inside of the sleeve to get them on the proper leg.

Materials:  The part of the RecoFiT sleeve that covers the back of your calf is made from a carbon-based compression fabric known as Resistex, and 36% Lycra.  The secondary support fabric is made of a combination of nylon and Lycra with a raised surface to aid in breathability and moisture management.

They are the thinnist sleeves I've tested, but they're also the warmest.

When I first put them on, I found the fabric slightly itchy.  I got used to the feel of the sleeves after about 20 minutes, and the fabric did not bother me on the trail.

The Resistex fabric was excellent at repelling dirt, but the nylon/Lycra portion of the sleeve was sheer enough to let dirt through, and there was a dusty covering on my legs when I took them off.

Styling:  I wear-tested the black RecoFit sleeves, but they also come in white.  I'd save the white for runs on the road or the treadmill.

The RecoFit sleeves are very sleek, and the seams, which lay flat so they don't irritate your skin, actually add to the cool and stylish look of the sleeves.

Overall, I liked the RecoFiT compression components calf sleeves.  If you're looking for a sleeve that provides the maximum amount of compression and is super thin with high-tech style, I would highly recommend RecoFiT.  They retail for $40 and can be found at a variety of specialty running stores.
