White Light Riot recently celebrated their CD release at the Varsity Theater and Communist Daughter was there for the party. The band seems to be increasingly on their game - their performances have only gotten better and better over the past year (and they didn't start at a particularly low point). Even though they were only the second out of four bands to perform that evening, the Varsity Theater was absolutely packed - if you didn't already have a seat by the time Communist Daughter took the stage, you weren't going to find one.
It is fairly well-known that the band went through a bit of a rough patch at the beginning of the year - for a brief period, it wasn't clear that the Twin Cities were going to be hearing more from the band that took the scene by storm last spring / summer. However, Johnny Soloman is back & he looks absolutely incredible. The entire band is coming together in a way that makes the already great music from the album such a treat to see live.
In even better news, Johnny is working on new material (which was unfortunately cut from the Varsity show because things were behind schedule) and plans for a second album are in the works. In the meantime, Communist Daughter will be featured in the Grey's Anatomy season finale - meaning that they will also be on this season's soundtrack. It will be brand new material, so be sure to check that out.
The one downside to the evening was that it was the last Communist Daughter show for Steve Yasgar (on drums) and Lee VanLith (on keys). They are moving on to exciting new opportunities in Colorado, but Communist Daughter fans are terribly sad to see them go. However, they went out on a wonderful high note and it is good to hear that the band will go on.
Check out their show this Saturday at the Art-a-Whirl. They'll be playing Elias Studio at 1:30pm.
