Even though Jerry Seinfeld famously disparaged George Costanza for wearing sweatpants in public, it is something we all do from time to time, some of us more often than others. Moreover, it is something we shouldn’t necessarily be ashamed of, especially if those sweatpants are made by American Giant. The American Giant exception to the sweatpants rule certainly applies to their Coach Pants that were recently reviewed right here, and it should probably apply to their regular, good old fashioned sweatpants, too.
Firstly, the specs:
- 100% cotton fleece (12.4 oz)
- 5% spandex-infused ribbed waistband with drawcord
- Side and back pockets
- Gusset crotch
- Double needle straddle stitching on all seams
- Prewashed and shrunk to fit

The cotton fleece is dense, warm, and cozy, and since it is prewashed, there’s no need to worry about shrinkage (unlike Mr. Costanza). To help keep these pants up, there’s a nice wide waistband with a broad, flat drawcord hidden inside. Though a feature rarely seen on a lot of sweatpants these days, the roomy pockets of these pants are the perfect place to stash a TV remote and a cell phone when you’re making snacks during halftime. The best feature of these pants, though, is also the one that is the hardest for all but the person wearing them to see, and that is the crotch gusset. This diamond shaped panel of fleece gives your boys some room to hang out and breathe without adding bulk or making it look like you are wearing a diaper. Nice.
When it comes to sweatpants, comfort should trump all. When it comes to these sweatpants, once you put them on the last thing you’ll want to do is take them off, they’re just that comfortable. That comfort combined with their classic, almost retro, good looks means you can live in them all weekend long whether you’re puttering around the house, kicking back and getting caffeinated at your favorite coffee house, or just watching reruns of BBC TopGear while eating leftover pizza.
