DC's hottest trend in food right now is the food trucks. Many have developed cult followings and there's war for turf among the best. With more and more trucks hitting the street, each vendor is forced to come up with something unique that's never been done before.
One of the newer trucks is the Big Cheese Truck, which serves...you guessed it...grilled cheese. But what makes this truck unique is that they don't use just any deli-style, processed cheese, rather their sandwiches are made with cheese from Cowgirl Creamery!
Cowgirl Creamery, is a California based small-scale producer of delicious organic cow's milk cheeses. They craft artisanal cheeses that Big Cheese Truck then slices and serves between two slices of artisanal bread from local producer, Lyon Bakery. Although Lyon is not organic, they are all natural and really if you have to choose one or the other, it's extremely important to purchase organic cheese to ensure that the milk going into the product is free of hormones and antibiotics.
There are several different sandwiches to choose from:
Barely Buzzed the traditional cheddar on sourdough
Midnight Moon with goat's milk gouda, caramelized onions on a multigrain
Mt Fuji feature the Mt Tam brie, fiji apple and honey on multigrain
Chipotle goat cheese with roasted red peppers on sun dried tomato
St Pat with artichoke hearts on dark honey wheat
Now any of these sandwiches alone are tasty, but not mind blowing. The real key to flavor combinations is to dip your sandwich in a cup of their tomato soup. The tomato soup adds a spicy flavor to the mix so that it elevates the grilled cheese and tomato soup of your childhood to a gourmet level.
Finish the meal with a sweet from Modern Domestic and you have the perfect, comfort food on the go, meal. The Brownie Cookie Sandwich is a real treat. It's basically a whoopie pie, but made with cookies. It's yummy, delicious and really hits that sweet tooth!
The Big Cheese Truck is always on the move, so follow it on Twitter to find out where they are at any given time.
