Climbing and Skiing Colorado’s Mountains: 50 Select Ski Descents

The newly released Climbing and Skiing Colorado’s Mountains: 50 Select Ski Descents by Ben Conners and Brian Miller is a must-have addition to your guidebook library. The arrival of this book couldn’t have come at a better time. With this year’s growing snowpack and cold temperatures, skiers finally have a genuine promise for outstanding spring ski conditions.

A measured approach to the backcountry
Too often the media portrays backcountry skiers as daredevils, willing to take extreme risks. In contrast to that stereotype, Conners and Miller successfully share something they love to do with “regular people”.

Relying on strong roots as in-bound skiers, Conners and Miller quietly began their explorations of the Colorado backcountry four years ago, building their skills as they took on more challenging terrain across the state.

Most people journey into recreational backcountry skiing over a number of years.

“We took a balanced approach to spending time on work, life and play. The key for us was finding a happy medium,” Miller said. “Our book provides a layman’s perspective and the routes are a healthy progression to acquiring skills. We wanted to make a book that’s both informational and inspirational.”

Route details, camping and food
While the core of Climbing and Skiing Colorado’s Mountains: 50 Select Ski Descents contains the requisite details one expects from a guidebook, such as directions to the trailhead, route distance, vertical gain, average slope angle, maps, photographs and difficulty ratings. The work goes one step further and includes invaluable advice on where to camp plus recommendations on superb “post climb grub”.

Conners comments, “Initially my intentions on this project may not have been as pure. More ego-driven outings gave way to understanding and respecting how big the Colorado Mountains are and how small we are. I’ve been humbled by the experience.”
