O Apostolo

If you enjoy the stop-motion animation of clay, claymation, then check out "The Apostle," during its short Oscar qualification run. This Spanish animated feature, as in from Spain AND in Spanish (with English subtitles) takes us to a time of faith and strange doings.

Fernando Cortizo directed and wrote "O Apóstolo" or "The Apostle." Our hero, Ramón (Carlos Blanco) isn't exactly an innocent. He's broken out of prison and parted ways with his accomplice. On his way to freedom, he travels on the Camino de Santiago and passes through a strange, isolated little town in the mountains where the people are all too eager to offer him a place to stay and some food and drink. Yes, drink. The few people who remain are old, even older than Ramón first guesses.

Ramón's greedy interest in the jewels, the silver and other valuables makes him too excited to eat fully. He creeps around and odd things happen. There are lights. People disappear. A cat dies. What does it all mean?

When a fat and arrogant feast (Paul Naschy) comes to town with his assistant, will he be able to save Ramón or will Ramón save him?

Cortizo won an Audience Award at the Annecy International Animated Film Festival in 2013 and a Special Jury Prize for International Fantasy Film Award at the Fantasporto in 2013.

There's nothing particularly gory and no sexual innuendos so this is save for kids. The monsters aren't horrific as they are all too human. This is safe, family entertainment with a slight moral lesson.

"O Apóstolo" or "The Apostle" is currently only playing at the Pasadena Laemmle Playhouse 7 and ends it run on 19 December 2013.
