Civil Twilight fans came from all over the country to the Bootleg Theatre in Los Angeles on Thursday, January 19. From as close as San Diego, to Arizona, to as far as Massachusetts and Maryland – the “soldiers” are certainly supportive of their favorite band.
The South African band’s first album, Civil Twilight, was released back in 2010 with another single, “Teardrop” (Massive Attack cover), released soon after. Since then fans have been craving new music from the talented trio.
The majority of Civil Twilight’s set at the Bootleg was new music; while fans might not be able to sing along much, the music fulfilled their desire for new tunes!
About halfway through the band’s hour and a half set, singer Steven McKellar’s voice cracked just the slightest and it was almost like I was snapped back to reality; I realized was watching a live show. McKellar has such good control of his voice; it makes the band’s live performances album-quality.
Not only that, but it’s easy to tell how much each band member loves what they do. McKellar (vocals/bass/keys) often closes his eyes and seems very passionate about his music. Brother Andrew McKellar (guitar) clearly loves his instrument; you won’t see a live Civil Twilight show without him taking a bow to his guitar for an incredibly unique sound. Drummer Richard Wouters isn’t as animated as several other drummers I’ve seen; but it’s evident from his subtler facial expressions that he enjoys the music he makes.
At the Bootleg another band member was added, Kevin, who was responsible for keys and even played bass for a song. He smiled a lot and looked like he was having a great time helping his friends make fantastic music.
Judging from the set list (below), there is a good chance that Civil Twilight’s second album Holy Weather, due out March 27, will be better than their first. Get a free download of “Doorway” – an amazing song – on the band’s facebook page!
