Cinema East: Winnebago Man

Returning guests to Cinema East should never forget to bring cash.  Not only to support HOPE Farmer’s market, but also to pay for admission.  In its second season, Cinema East is no longer free, but gives movie-goers access to the beautiful French Legation Museum.

Arrive an hour before sunset (when the movie begins to roll). People stroll into the gates as much as two hours early bundled with blankets, pillows, and beverages.  They come in cars, on bicycles, or on foot.  Those familiar with season one are perfectly prepared with assorted cushions, snacks, and friends.  Staking your perfect patch of grass is no laughing matter and giving yourself a chance to purchase food from the sponsors are a must.

This first screening was Winnebago Man by Ben Steinbauer.  In his documentary, Steinbauer attempts to explore the life of Jack Rebney.  In a series of twists, the documentary becomes a commentary on contemporary life from a man who will not give up something most of us already have.

Cinema East will continue until September seventh showing a film every other Sunday at the French Legation Museum.  Films are selected from Sundance, Marfa, SXSW, and Austin Film Festivals.  Join your fellow Austinites on the French Legation lawn instead of brooding about Sunday night on your living room couch.
