While Joel Kinnaman is most well-known here in the states for this role in the series The Killing and most recently taking on the mantle of Robocop, he has another franchise in the Swedish film series Easy Money aka Snabba cash. The first film in the trilogy debuted in 2010 and became an instant hit in Sweden. Now the second in the series, Easy Money: Hard to Kill aka Snabba cash II is getting its US release thanks to Cinedigm.
Easy Money: Hard to Kill follows the promising business student who became an organized coke smuggler now serving hard time in prison and struggling to get back on an honest path. There are glimmers of hope in his life, some venture capitalists are interested in a new piece of trading software he's developed and while behind bars he's made peace with an old enemy. On leave from prison, and back in contact with his former gang, he learns that once you've walked in the shoes of a criminal there just may be no going back. This crime thriller works well for what they are trying to accomplish but gets a bit confusing due to it bouncing around between too many characters. At times it becomes hard to know what is actually going on and who is trying to kill who thus making it hard to keep interest. Thankfully Kinnaman is as good as ever bringing an innocence to the role while maintaining the strength needed when the time arises. There is a slow build to the story that is sometimes not paced all that well, but seems to get back on track pretty quickly. There are only a few moments of violence, but each cause some major shifts in the story as they should.
Part of the issue with this film being hard to follow for some will no doubt be due to missing out on the first entry into the series. This is an ample crime drama that features some great performances and interesting directions for the characters as well as a set-up of things to come, but needs to be seen from the first entry. Get out there and find you a copy of Easy Money aka Snabba cash available now and get ready for when Easy Money: Hard to Kill aka Snabba cash II when it hits stores on March 11th and be on the lookout for Easy Money: Life Deluxe aka Snabba cash – Livet deluxe.
